Ile de Goree (Goree Island) lies a few kilometres off the coast from Dakar, the capital of Senegal. It was through here that literally millions of people passed on their way to a life of slavery in the Americas. The inscription above this loading exit of the dungeon-like holding cells reads 'La porte de voyage sans retour' - The door to the journey without return.
