nest of 100 eggs

Photograph

Leatherbacks lay an average of 100 eggs per nest. Each egg survives the fall into the nest by having a flexible shell. The position of this nest just above the high tide mark meant the eggs would be under threat of drowning in the event of a higher than average tide. The decision was therefore made to move it higher up the beach, a procedure that can only be done within 3 hours of laying without resulting in significant loss of egg viability.
