The Pacific leatherback turtle population faces extinction. A growing awareness of their precarious situation has led many island communities to ban the eating of adults and eggs. Nevertheless, many turtles drown each year after becoming ensnared in commercial fishing nets, or else die after mistaking floating plastic bags for their jellyfish food source.
