Tetepare

Photograph

Tetepare, a 120 square kilometre island in the New Georgia archipelago is one of the last islands in the Solomons that remains undeveloped. No one has lived on Tetepare for the past 150 years - descendents of the original inhabitants are now spread across the province. These traditional owners have been divided on how to manage the island so that they may derive a livelihood from it. The 2000+ member Tetepare Descendents Association, with the help of international volunteers, and funded in part by the World Wildlife Fund, is fighting to resist pressure from logging companies and establish a conservation management plan for the island.
